This listing is for ONE root (3-5 stems) of Water Sprite from my healthy and snail free betta fish tank. You will receive a root of plant similar size to the one shown on my hand.
Water Sprite is a popular aquatic plant, known for its delicate, fern-like leaves and versatility in aquascapes. Scientifically, it’s often identified as Ceratopteris thalictroides. It can be used as a floating plant or anchored in the substrate, making it a favorite for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
What Is Water Sprite?
• Appearance:
Water Sprite has finely divided, feathery leaves that give it a light, airy look. When grown floating, its leaves spread across the water’s surface, creating a natural cover. Anchored in the substrate, it can add a lush, green touch to the mid- or background of an aquarium.
• Natural Habitat:
Native to tropical freshwater environments, it thrives in warm, nutrient-rich waters. Its adaptability means it can flourish in both planted aquariums and outdoor water gardens.
• Usage in Aquascaping:
Due to its fast growth and easy propagation, Water Sprite helps control algae by absorbing excess nutrients, while also offering shelter for small fish and invertebrates.
How to Grow Water Sprite
1. Lighting
• Requirements:
Water Sprite does well under moderate lighting. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, brighter light will promote fuller, denser growth.
• Placement:
When grown as a floating plant, ensure it receives ample light from above. If anchored, position it in areas where it can access good lighting without being outcompeted by taller plants.
2. Water Conditions
• Temperature:
It thrives in tropical temperatures, ideally between 72°F and 82°F (22°C–28°C).
• pH:
A neutral to slightly acidic pH (around 6.5–7.5) is optimal.
• Water Quality:
Keep the water clean and well-filtered. Regular water changes help maintain nutrient balance and prevent buildup of waste.
3. Planting and Positioning
• Floating vs. Anchored:
Water Sprite can be left to float freely, or you can anchor it by lightly burying its roots in a nutrient-rich substrate. When anchoring, avoid burying the crown or the base of the plant to prevent rot.
• Arrangement:
Use it to create a natural cover on the water surface or to add a soft, green element to the midground of your aquascape.
4. Nutrients and Fertilization
• Substrate Nutrients:
A nutrient-rich substrate can boost growth if the plant is anchored.
• Liquid Fertilizer:
Supplementing with a liquid fertilizer designed for aquatic plants can encourage robust growth, especially in tanks with low nutrient levels.
• CO₂:
While not strictly necessary, adding CO₂ may enhance growth rates and overall plant health in a densely planted setup.
5. Propagation and Maintenance
• Propagation:
Water Sprite reproduces easily through fragmentation. You can trim sections of the plant, and these cuttings will quickly root and grow into new plants.
• Maintenance:
Regular trimming helps keep the plant from overgrowing or shading other species. Remove any yellow or decaying leaves to maintain water quality and plant health.
By providing the right balance of lighting, water quality, and nutrients, Water Sprite can become a lush, dynamic addition to your aquarium or water garden. Its adaptability and ease of care make it an excellent choice for creating a natural, thriving aquatic environment.
